Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?' - Peter Maher, Irish-Canadian Olympian and sub-2:12 marathoner

cold sunday

Sunday was a beautiful day in Missoula, but pretty chilly at 8:30 am. I don't know if it was the chill in the air or if I'm maybe getting sick, but I was very winded while running. I need to slip some other runs in during the week or other forms of exercise. I tried out a pilates DVD yesterday as well. The pilates part was hard, but good. My "powerhouse," my abs are sore. The cardio/aerobics was pretty redundant, but at least my heart rate was up. As it starts to get colder, I really need to have a good plan for working out or I will become a sloth this winter.

5 O.K.

Saturday's River City Roots run happened despite cold, rainy temps here in MSO. Runnerika, JoanLindsay, Laurie and Q. were happily/sleepily in attendance when they fired the starting pistol. Joan was off like a bolt of lightening. Erika and I ran together for about two seconds until she took off and Laurie was speed walking behind me. I ran the entire 5 kilometers, but felt a bit tired and slow. I'm proud of myself for not walking though and it was definitely motivating to keep running. So, good job everyone! Next race in Missoula is the All Women's Race sponsored by the Blue Mountain Clinic on October 7.

Feeling Guilty

Hey Fast Girls -

Sorry for the lack of workout posts lately. I'm going to start writing them on the weekends and posting the entire week instead of everyday. School is sort of all consuming lately but, I don't want it to be that way so I'll improve. Also I'm about to start a job as a student blogger at UM so I'm going to change the settings of our blog to private so it won't show in my profile. They're running the UM blogs using blogger as well. Anyway. Hope you're well. Look for new workouts soon. If anyone else is interested in writing up some workouts let me know. I'd gladly take a week off.

New workouts soon. Joanie

recovery time

I played the first game of our fall season for soccer last night. It was kind of a haphazard game, but I felt pretty good...until my leg on collision with the best player on the opposing team meaning instead of getting my whole body in front of him I chickened out and just stuck my leg out. Both of his knees collided with my calf and I fell on my shoulder while my shoe flew off. Needless to say, I'm going to have a sweet bruise on my left leg and my shoulder is a bit out of whack. I'm taking a break tonight and will do some stretching (thanks for the tip, runnerika). I feel like I should run at least one more time before Saturday's race so we'll see how Wednesday feels. Anyway, lesson learned: sometimes being cautious is more painful than just going for it.

Sunday Runday revisited

It's been a couple weeks since I've actually been running so Sunday's run was good. We kind of did the loop route of Saturday's River City Roots 5K. There's one hill on the north side of the Clark Fork that will come towards the end of the race so be prepared Fast Girls. Anyway, I'm a bit sore from running yesterday and from raking 6 bags of leaves in my backyard. That's a total upper body workout. I feel good though. First soccer game of the Fall season is tonight. All in all, my running hiatus is over. I hope all is well with Fast Girls nationwide.

Workout for September 6

Hey sorry about the long delay. Hope everyone had a nice long weekend and stayed out of the smoke. Laura congrats on your smokefree status and your new haircut.

A reminder that if you want a t-shirt for the upcoming River City Roots Festival you need to have your registration in by this Friday at 5:00. Hope to see some of you there.

Now back to the workout. It's still really smoky here so please be really careful if you are running in Missoula. Think about workout indoors if you have that choice. Air Quality is poor today.

Beginner - 25 minute run/walk
Intermediate - 35 minute run
Advanced - 40 minute run

Don't push to hard especially if you are outside in Missoula. Pay attention to your body and seriously consider taking the day off from outside activity until the air quality get's a little better.

Hope you are all well. School is making my schedule a little crazy right now so my apologies for my absence. Keep up the good work.

bad runner

While I haven't been running since last week, I did play a little soccer on Thursday and hope to do some active stuff this Labor Day weekend. In other news, as of yesterday I haven't smoked a cigarette in a month. I just got my haircut as a reward. Thanks for being so supportive everyone. I'll hit the pavement again soon.
